About the Hackathon

ETH Rwanda Hackathon: Ethereum for Everyone: Learn and Build

Dates: October 25 - 27, 2024
Location: Kigali, Rwanda (Hybrid: In-person & Virtual)
Prizes: Grand Prize - $1000 + Bounties for Classes

Overview

The ETH Rwanda Hackathon is part of the larger Ethereum for Everyone: Learn and Build initiative supported by the Ethereum Foundation. This hackathon is designed to onboard developers, innovators, and tech enthusiasts into the Ethereum ecosystem while fostering collaboration across diverse groups of participants. Whether you are a university student, tech hub member, professional, or an independent innovator (free agent), this hackathon will challenge you to solve real-world problems using Ethereum technology.

Why Participate?

  • Bragging Rights: Compete against the brightest minds in Rwanda and claim top honors for your class.
  • Learning Opportunity: Gain hands-on experience with Ethereum’s Scaffoldeth 2 framework and unlock the potential of decentralized applications (dApps).
  • Prize Money: A $1000 grand prize and bounties based on metrics such as best project per class.

Classes

Participants will register under one of the following classes, fostering community competition within different developer categories:

  1. University: Students from Rwanda’s top universities (e.g., ALU, CMU).
  2. HK: Innovators from leading tech hubs like Norrsken.
  3. Free Agent: Independent developers not affiliated with any organization.
  4. Professional: Career developers, engineers, and blockchain experts.
  5. Tribe: Individuals affiliated with blockchain or Ethereum communities such as ABI.

Each class will compete for inter-class bounties in addition to the overall hackathon grand prize. Submissions will be judged based on the class they represent, with specific rewards for the best-performing project from each category.

Tracks

We encourage creativity and welcome projects from any sector that can leverage Ethereum’s capabilities. Some suggested tracks include:

  • Decentralized Finance (DeFi)
  • Social Good & Impact
  • Gaming & NFTs
  • DAOs & Governance
  • Supply Chain Solutions

Tools & Resources

  • All projects must be built using Scaffoldeth 2, which enables seamless Ethereum dApp development.
  • Workshops on October 12, October 19, and October 24 will provide the training necessary to succeed in the hackathon. Attendance is highly recommended to ensure readiness.

Judging Criteria

Projects will be evaluated by a panel of 7 expert judges from top institutions like ALU, CMU, ALX, Norrsken, ABI, BuidlGuidl (BG), and Unlock Protocol. Judges will score submissions based on four key criteria:

  1. Technical Complexity (0-25)
  2. Innovation (0-25)
  3. Practicality (0-25)
  4. Impact & Community Benefit (0-25)

Each judge will assign scores based on the above criteria. The final score for each project will be calculated by combining the individual scores from all judges. The project with the highest overall score will win the grand prize, and the process will repeat for inter-class bounties (i.e., the best project from each class).

Prizes

  • Grand Prize: $1000 for the highest-scoring project across all classes.
  • Bounties and Quests: Awards for the best project within each class.

How to Register

  1. Choose a Class: Register by selecting your class (University, Tech Hub, Free Agent, Professional, Community).
  2. Form Your Team: Teams should consist of 2-5 members, with at least one member who has attended one of the workshops.
